Tips for choosing Tango Shoes, Clothes and Accessories for tango practice and events:
For Argentine tango classes and dancing we highly recommend wearing comfortable clothes and leather/suede sole shoes. Street shoes are not permitted. Avoid sharp toes, square heels and shoes that leave black marks on the floor.
If you don't have special tango shoes try jazz/dance sneakers as they could be comfortable especially for practicing, otherwise cotton sports socks could be fine for the first classes (the ones which are a bit thicker on the sole).
Shoes tips for gentlemen: gluing a suede sole to sneakers like "Puma" and similar flat-sole shoes will help use them as dance shoes (the fluffy side should be out for better sliding!)
NB: It's not recommended to use them both as dance and street shoes.
Shoes tips for ladies: one of the most popular women's shoe brand is now Tangolera Shoes. These tango shoes are famous and loved for it's softer padding, comfy beautiful designs, and a well-centered steady heel which can be crucial when dancing, both for following and leading. There are many gorgeous models both for men and women. (I used to be their distributor in BC).
*** When you invest in a good pair of professional dancing shoes, it helps to keep the feet healthy and achieve more beautiful dancing technique. It is not a selling trick, it is a fact, because good shoes are designed specially for dancing. ***

GENERAL TIPS for buying tango shoes:
Keep in mind that same pair of shoes might "feel" different on various types of floors (different venues), that's why it is usually helpful to have 3+ pairs of dancing shoes, for various floors and outfits :), and depending on the season (in the summer and when dancing at festivals and marathons your feet might be a bit more swollen if the environment is hot). Usually changing shoes during the intense dancing (at bigger events) helps to enjoy dancing in high heels longer.
There are pros and cons about purchasing tango shoes online, it can be convenient however hard to setimate "the feel" of the shoes as well as height of the heel. For beginners and if you are not used to walking in high heels, generally it is best to choose a pair with a 7-8cm heel. 9cm and higher are ok for those who are used to high heels. It is usually recommended to try a similar pair of shoes of a particular brand before buying when it's possible or finding someone who has a similar brand / pair to see if the shoes and size fit well.
*** Second-hand shoes in good condition might also be an option if they fit well and you like the design. It's quite common to exchange shoes as well… Keep in mind that some shoes are easier to get stretched with time than others (depends on the material and design).
*** Creative tip for crafty people: if you like have leather / suede shoes and would like to refinish/decorate them, acrylic paint or Rhinestones might add a unique touch to your favourite shoes. Check craft magazines / web articles / youtube for more tips.
